Although we'd vacationed here for many years, usually staying on the Isle of Palms, we'd never heard of the Sea Biscuit Café. So after a great recommendation, we were off to our newest adventure. The Sea Biscuit Café is a place you want to like. The restaurant is small, the staff is very friendly, and the atmosphere is very welcoming. On top of that they've been there since 1987 so you'd figure they must be doing something right. They only accept cash or local checks which to some may be a turn off, but good for them!! The credit card rates are so high it's nice to someone finding a way around them. Two large blackboards describe the daily specials. All seemed interesting, but my husband chose the homemade banana bread French toast. Boring as it may seem I chose a sausage and cheese omelet with a biscuit and home fries. As we waited for our meal the restaurant's business was brisk. Customers came and went and the staff kept the pace. We were quickly served juice - orange and grapefruit and were somewhat disappointed. I don't know if they are made from concentrate, but they tasted like they were, not great. Our waitress was kind, but forgetful. She did not know who ordered which juice and this forgetfulness would prove true for breakfast as well. I watched as her service style was repeated with the tables around us. "Who had the Shrimp Benedict?" How hard can this be, the restaurant has about 15 tables. Our breakfast arrived in no time. The plates were nicely garnished with whipped cream, fresh bananas, a small slice of fresh pineapple and cantaloupe and a small slice of a Roma tomato. Nice, but really not necessary. I would have rather had the focus on our breakfast versus its garnish. The banana bread French toast was hardly toasted, so it just seemed like banana bread, very odd. My husband remarked that he thought there was a bit of a "taste transfer", whereas the bread was cooked with something else. Hmmm. My omelet was cold inside and out and I asked the waitress to take it back. She quickly returned and said that they were going to make a new one for me, and it arrived rather quickly. A great recovery. Whatever they use on their griddle for shortening was so overpowering that I couldn't eat my breakfast. The hash browns were good, as was the biscuit. But everything else smelled and tasted like some type of bad oil. My husband was right; the taste transfer of other menu items/oil really ruined the meal. There's a saying that something leaves "a bad taste in your mouth", this was true of our visit to the Sea Biscuit Café. If you go, we hope you're luckier.

Seabiscuit Cafe is easily my favorite place to eat on the Isle of Palms! I will make it a point to get up 15 minutes early so I can swing by and pick up breakfast before work. You think it would be hard to mess up something as simple as a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit, but once you try Seabiscuits you will quickly realized how wrong everyone else has been! Delicious food with your quaint southern charm! For all you out-of-towners- trust the locals! Follow the locals to find out where the best food in town is. Only downside is they take CASH only! That is why I allow 15 minutes extra in the morning, 5 minute drive, 5 minutes to run to the ATM next-door and 5 minutes for the food to be ready! Quick if you want it to be, but also the perfect place to sit out on the screened in porch drink a glass of sweet tea and enjoy your company! I highly recommend Seabiscuit Cafe on the Isle of Palms, SC!

This is a small place and very popular, at least in July when the island is packed with tourists. The cafe is small but homey and had great service, very good food (I had the blueberry/walnut french toast and really enjoyed it). Also note there is outside dining on a small porch - I wasn't aware of that until I'd been seated inside, where it was fairly loud with every table taken. They only take cash - this is clearly posted on the door as you come in. And I agree with others who've noted it is quite expensive for a simple diner. My french toast and a cup of coffee were over $14 with tip. I'd come back though, due to the great quality of the food and excellent service.

Five people, three of whom have been coming here for years under the former owners Mike and Brenda, came in with son and future daughter in law in tow. We were seated at a very small square table with four chairs, and a fifth was added. There were three empty two seat tables and we wanted to pull one of these together to make it fit for five. The five chairs at this tiny table even looked ridiculous. The hostess was the rudest most unsmiling and nasty person I have ever seen at that job. She refused to let us have the table. There were empty tables and no crowd at all. The waitress was indifferent. We walked out. We will not be back unless the old owners return or the place changes hands again.

Every time I'm in Charleston/Isle of Palms I go here. Their food has been great for years and years. This last time we had breakfast and everything was great as usual. I had homemade granola with yogurt and fruit and it was delicious. I also ordered an egg over medium and it arrived perfectly cooked. Consistently great food.

I had breakfast on two separate occasions while on vacation. Really enjoyed the Eggs Benedict and the Shrimp & Gravy with Eggs (go for the grits instead of the home fries for a real low country treat). My son went with the pancakes and I have to admit he couldn't finish them so I did...some of the best pancakes I have ever tasted - light and fluffy! Excellent service and really good coffee to boot! Highly recommend but bring cash...no credit cards.

No doubt about it, short hours, and not open every day, but when they are open it is a great thing. All menu items are excellent and well done, inexpensive and good ole beach atmosphere. In an old house .. funky, lots of beach funk decor, dollar bills and things. But the omlets and crab cakes and things here are noteworthy. Breakfast is a big deal, locals consider breakfast a treat here. And don't get tired of coming back often. Unpretentious and what you want for one meal every time to come down from the high country (anywhere north of Isle of Palms) enjoy the beach for the different place that it is.

I love going here whenever I get the chance. It is a cute, cozy atmosphere and close to the beach. They make a fantastic crab cake benedict, too! The quality of the ingredients comes through and they have an awesome menu that includes items that aren't just your run of the mill breakfast fare. The only thing is to make sure you have cash. They don't take credit or debit cards. Well worth a trip to the atm.

There are few things that really disturb me more than a place that charges what they want to because of lack of competition, location or a combination of the two, and that's the first thing that I sadly took away from the Sea Biscuit Cafe. Add an indifference to a service issue when it came to the food and how it was served that got an apology by no compensation or offer to reduce the bill from the manager who took our money and deposited it into the antique register. This rant is fully because I feel like for the portion sizes and the price, I was taken advantage of. The food was very good. I wouldn't call it "inventive", "outstanding", "clever" or "remarkable", but very good for breakfast food. Let the record show; I'll pay for quality. I'm from Chicago and have eaten and paid at some high end places, including Tru in Chicago and Aureole in Las Vegas. I'm not adverse to spending where quality is concerned. What I *am* adverse to, hell, I'd call it allergic to, is being overcharged deliberately. Here was our breakfast: Me: Scrambled eggs, home fries, biscuit with gravy, bacon, water. My wife: Banana bread, yogurt bowl with fruit and granola, coffee. Kids (4 and 2): The kiddie cake (vague Orlando and Anaheim-based rodent-shaped head), "fruit" (two miniscule wedges of watermelon and cantaloupe) and one orange juice. Total with tax: $42 and change. Pardon me, but when you consider all that, it's probably more within the range of $28 - $32 including tax, and that's if you were to do it twice; once at Waffle House and once at Lenny's, er, Denny's. Omelets with a single add (cheese or a protein) were $9. Shrimp and grits (which you're admittedly not going to find everywhere and can probably get away with a premium charging for) is $11. And the heinous service act was bringing out the food for my wife and I first while leaving the kids to stare at ours for about three to four more minutes until theirs arrived. I'm sorry, but anybody who's served a family or has or had little ones knows if you have to split an order, you get theirs out *first*. To do it backwards was absolutely asinine. I feel bad reviewing it this way and maybe I'm hammering the point a bit too hard, but places that are "kitch" or "neighborhood standards" or "have stood the test of time" do so for one of two reasons. Firstly, they're an anchor in the community with a generous sprinkling of locals who support a local business because they want it to survive for their own reasons and not necessarily for the tourists with whom they share their turf. The second is because it's like the famed "Restaurant at the end of the universe" where you get a new crowd through every time and because there's not a ton of competition, people are willing to spend on vacation, they win by default. It's against my ethos to support winners by default, and that's how I feel about the Sea Biscuit Cafe.

Good breakfast (get there early the wait can be a pain). Beware they only take cash, no credit/debit cards. I had blueberry/walnut French toast ... superb, my wife had a big omelet, also superb. Beware it's a bit pricey, 28$ w/tip for breakfast for 2 with coffee & diet coke.

Great little joint on IOP that serves breakfast and lunch and only takes cash. Emphasis on little and only takes cash, folks. Take it from someone who never carries cash; bring some green! I've been once for breakfast and once for lunch, and recommend you order The Treehugger (fruit and granola over yogurt) or off of the blackboard for breakfast. I ordered an egg biscuit from the menu and was not enthralled, but did dig into my friend's Treehugger and loved it. Will definitely get that next time. For lunch I had the house salad with a scoop of tuna salad on top and it was very good. I felt that $9 was a fair price for the serving I received, and could have eaten the homemade ranch dressing with a spoon had there been one on the table. There aren't a ton of tables and the place is always busy, so expect to wait 30 minutes or so, especially on the weekends. And there isn't a ton of parking, so be ready to pay for that if you can't just walk. Service was okay both times as we arrived a bit off-peak (around 10:30 for breakfast and 1pm for lunch). And remember to bring cash!

Complete, utter, failure of a restaurant. Yea I said it. And I'll say it again. Food: Terrible. Bland. Go to IHOP. It's also cheaper there. Or Wafflehouse, whatever is in this region. Service: Pretty bad - dismissive. I went with a bunch of colleagues of mine (working professionals our mid-20's, well behaved and cordial) and we were treated like children. That being said, everyone else there was older than 50. The fingernail: Yep. A fingernail. There was a fingernail in my omelet. And the omelet was terrible by itself. So how does a fingernail get into one's food? On purpose. You have to intentionally place a fingernail into the omelet. RIDICULOUS. I politely told the waitress that there was a foreign object in my food, and she at first didn't believe me. Then I showed her a neatly clipped fingernail (or maybe a small toe). With a half-hearted apology, she took the omelet away. And yes, I lost my appetite. As the check came around, she mentioned that she wasn't going to bother charging me, and left it at that. Pretty dismissive. So bottom line, this is the quaint, saccharine, wonder bread sea side cottage breakfast place that you should avoid at all cost.

Inefficient, surly, and they don't care at all about what kind of experience you have...and after a half an hour, we're still waiting for our food! And it's just breakfast...

I came here for breakfast, which felt like dining in an old friend's sun room. Except this old friend might have had a bone to pick. The waitress wasn't particularly pleasant, and the food was just okay. This is one of those places that you want to love for its charm and character, but just ends up falling short.

I was in search of a place that met the standards of Josephs downtown...Sigh..to no avail, I did not find her here. A friend was singing this places praises, so I decided to try it out on a cool breezy Saturday afternoon. I will say I like the set up of the place. It feels like your going to an aunts house or a good friends house for breakfast...it feels familiar. The prices arent outrageous, given its location, but the food was meh. We ordered the banana bread, which was nothing to gloat about. I can make better banana bread for sure. (The best banana bread I have EVER had was in dt Asheville at Early Girl. WHOA.) My friend ordered a crab omelet and I ordered a chiles omelet (chilies, cheese, onions..something else in it i forgot). Our omelets were HUGE, BUT the huge downer was the eggs were not cooked properly! The whites of the eggs were runny and raw, blending in with the cheese..YUCK. My friends omelet was cooked the same way. Raw white eggs mixed with crab meat? Disgusting. It really was a yucky mess. My gf had hers sent back, and i pecked at the actual cooked parts of mine. I kinda felt bad sending both back. When It came back and it was still the same, so I guess thats just how they make them unless you specify you want to eggs cooked hard. I mean, we all have made omelets before, and know the eggs have got to be firm so the flavor of the filling is not overshadowed by runny whites of the eggs..That was just not good. The french toast was also meh. Again, Ive definitely had better, even at the cafeteria at work. The biscuits were alright, nothing notable. The only thing that really stood out was the fruit plate. It was colorful and filled with great selections. That was it. Besides that, the omelets were a mess, the french toast was mediocre, and the banana bread tasted like it came straight out of a box. BUT all that said, I probably would go back just because I like the feel of the place; I would just order something else. That matters most assuredly, so I would definitely hit this place up again. CIAO!

Crab cake Benedict was very good. A touch pricey but worth it if you have 45 minutes to wait for breakfast.

I've been here a few times, always for breakfast, as they are only open for breakfast and lunch. It's small, unassuming down home southern breakfast. I wouldn't change anything about this place. Everything has been great as far as the food. I don't get here often enough, but will continue to patron as often as possible. My favorite breakfast in Charleston area.

This place was great! We had to wait outside about 15 minutes, which wouldn't have been a bog deal at all, except it was quite cold and windy. The food was great, and our waitress was friendly. I can see how someone might feel like they are getting a little attitude from the waitstaff, but I think they were in great spirits, especially considering they wait on tons of rich assholes everyday. Don't miss this spot if you are in the area, and def get the biscuits and home fries.

I'm not sure what the attraction is to this place. It reminds me of a scene in the Don DeLillo novel White Noise where eager tourists line up to take pictures of "the most photographed barn in America" just because it's the most photographed barn in America. Bear with me because there's a brief quiz at the end of this review. So it is with this place. The food is good, basically, but not stellar. I liked the omelet with vegetables, the sandwiches, coffee, toast, etc.. It is good, but you could find something just as good or better somewhere else. Each time I've been there's no parking. The customers are lined up out front. One time after a 45 minute wait, we just gave up and ate somewhere else. The house is small, so they pack customers in like sardines in a can. There's a 10-minute wait for the restroom; amuse yourself by looking at the foreign currency collection on the wall--a reminder that they only accept cash. The waitstaff does the job under rushed conditions, but they're not really friendly. I guess I can understand that given the circumstances. Nor is there any love lost from the owner lady, either. One time we had waited outside in the heat for an hour to be seated for breakfast, it was 5 minutes into the lunch menu when we got seated, and I asked her if I could have pancakes, and I was greeted with a stony "Certainly not." Evidently, pouring that batter on the grill 5 minutes into lunch would have represented a major breech of protocol and a terrible inconvenience for her cook-husband, but probably not as much of an inconvenience as it was for me to have to wait an hour to be seated for breakfast-now-lunch. Alright, so here's the quiz. With the long wait, difficult parking, sitting in the hot Carolina sun, the average food, cramped seating conditions, the servers with attitude, and an owner with all the friendliness and tact of a dragon--why are all those people lining up to take pictures of that barn?

I first want to say that the food was decent. I ordered blueberry walnut french toast and a side of grits. I did not receive the blueberry walnut french toast however. Instead I got the regular french toast. When I told the waitress this there was no offer to rectify the . I was just told " sorry about that." Not a good way to get a customer to come back.

The food was fresh and home made. We waited for 30 minutes but, the wait was worth it. The server Lori was patient, courteous, and attentive. The food was super delicious. We had the omelet, one with aspargus, mushroom and cheese; the second omelet was spinach, tomato, shrimp, and cheese. We were 4 adults and two children. My daughter in law had the eggs benedict and my son ordered the brown sugar swirl french toast. I had the corned beef hash, grits, and sausage. The food was excellent. Try the sausage gravy on a biscuit. You will love it. They only take cash, no credit cards. We are in Charleston three times a year and we always go to Sea Biscuit Cafe.

When I found that I hadn't review the Biscuit, I was a little surprised. I'd planned to just write an update. Others have amply described the small house setting, and the long weekend waits (and weekday's too in the summer). I haven't experienced any of the curt service, but maybe I've been lucky. I've always been happy with my meals. More so at times than others, but haven't had a bad meal or experience. I like their quiches. But, if you ever see the Mahi-Mahi Eggs Benedict on the chalkboard, stop looking, and order it. The fish was moist (broiled I suspect), and it complimented the eggs beautifully. The sauce was light and didn't get in the way of the taste of the fish, the eggs and the muffin. No one at the table got a bite. The wife confided yesterday that she really wanted to get it too, but since my folks were buying, she didn't want to spend too much of their money. She's kind, but that was a mistake. She forgot that they were riding around on gas from the gas card we gave them at Christmas :) Do try this place, it's a cool beach experience.

Great breakfast spot on Isle oif Palms, SC. Hash and eggs were actual corned beef hand chopped and blended for a wonderful hash. Eggs Benes with country ham and fresh made hollandaise. Omelet special was perfectly done and generous. The stand out was my morning intro to Low Country cooking consisting of light and delicately fried flounder, eggs, and REAL cheese grits! Toss in some homemade biscuits and some good coffee, and we were all extremely happy. We are going back on Thursday! Bright open decor fits this place's style well.

The gold standard for good ole southern breakfast food! Their lunch menu is also fantastic. Get there early on the weekends and during the season as the wait can be long but worth it. Note, this is a cash only establishment so hit the ATM before you go.

Want to get a great breakfast surrounded by people going to the beach OR coming from the beach with the smell of sunscreen in the air? This is the place. They offer breakfast and lunch. Get here before 10am, or else plan on waiting 15-30 minutes minimum. Not bad, unless it's 95 degrees. Order for the breakfast chalkboard. Great specials with uncommon items. Had Eggs Benedict with evocatively good! They're known for biscuits and biscuit sandwiches, but they offer everything else too. They only accept cash so keep the cards at home.

Four stars! My guest and I enjoyed breakfast on Saturday, arriving at 10 AM the wait was 30 minutes on the porch. (1st Suggestion: Would recommend the host(ess) set up a water and coffee area for guests waiting on the outside.) Once seated the interior is comfortable, though tight, and air conditioned. It took about 30 more minutes for our food to arrive from the time of ordering (2nd Suggestion: Server have a few recommendations on hand for the quick breakfast and/or appetizer to nourish the empty stomach for an hour.) The omelots were delicious and more dry than wet. Avoid the INSTANT grits, however. Fruit salad good. The generous helping of home fries (new potatoes, parboiled - then panfried) was wonderful - not overseasoned, and not greasy. Good job on the foods! Would normally give 3 stars when a restaurant meets minimum expectations, BUT the hidden jewel really surprised us with the outstanding jelly and jam offerings. In addition to the regular grape and strawberry and real butter selections, they offered the luxury peach jan and marmalade and this earned them 4 Stars. We'll probably return in the off-season to save the hour in our busy weekend days. Location and parking are tricky, but once you find it, you will know the quirks / in's and out's next visit. MapQuest can be a bit tricky for the JC Long side street, so look closely! Breakfast for two with gratuity was $26. Enjoy!

Great breakfast spot. It is such a popular spot it was a treat to get seated right away. It is very cozy inside. The service was very fast and very courteous. I had a sausage, egg, and cheese biscuit with a side of bacon. My coffee never got low or cold. A great way to start Sunday morning .

After one trip to the Sea Biscuit Cafe, I am already hooked! I've been meaning to try this place for the past few summers and am so glad we found the time to do so. Set inside of an old beach house, this place is oozing with beachy charm. Our group of five crowded around a square table in the enclosed patio section of the restaurant. It was packed inside, and when we left there was a large group of customers just waiting to be seated. Food: Sea Biscuit offers virtually everything you could hope a good breakfast joint would. Both the general menu and specials board were full of local flavor. I decided to try the brown sugar french toast, served with fresh fruit on the side. Great portions=wonderful choice! The waitress was more than friendly and the buzzing ambience made for a great meal as well. Bottom line: If you are in the area of IOP (or even Mount Pleasant or Sullivan's) stop in, cash in hand (no credit cards here!) and give Sea Biscuit a try for a tasty pre-beach breakfast.

The Sea Biscuit is a nice place to go for breakfast. It's a small house and there are complaints about the line but when I was there it was only a few minutes. They have all kinds of meals with fruit and of course traditional southern items as well. The food snobs snicker that it's a tourist trap but that just means the tourists have good taste. If the food snobs had their way nobody could eat anywhere. If you overdo it with the food you can go to the Ravenal Bridge and walk or bike across and burn off those calories.

Seabiscuit is an adorable little restaurant in a converted house, with seating in either the small interior dining room or the small screened porch. It's a local favorite, so expect a wait unless you get there right when they open. Seabiscuit serves breakfast and lunch but while I'm sure lunch is great, we always go there for breakfast. There are breakfast specials listed on chalkboards on the wall; typically there's a sweet dish such as blueberry walnut french toast, an omelet of the day such as feta/spinach/tomato, as well as a featured breakfast quiche. You really can't go wrong ordering anything on the menu. Order fresh fruit and you get a large plate of very high-quality, assorted fruits from strawberries to kiwis to pineapples and blueberries. Baked goods (such as nut breads) aren't made on-premise but are sourced from a high-quality local bakery and are delicious. Service is friendly but the place is always busy so don't be surprised that the servers are usually rushing from one table to the next. Despite this, they stay on top of things such as coffee and water refills. Aside from the wait and crowded seating, the biggest downside is that the food is on the pricey side and the restaurant only accepts cash and local checks. It's not unusual for breakfast for two to run as much as $40, including tip. However, the food is so tasty and of such high quality, and the atmosphere so casual and "beachy," that it's definitely worth going to Seabiscuit for breakfast every now and then, especially if it is your first visit to Isle of Palms.

Ignore the bad reviews. This is a quaint place with great food. It's small, so you may have to wait, but it is worth it. They only take cash, so come prepared. The blueberry walnut French toast is excellent.

I had what was some of the best corned beef hash that I can remember at this restaurant. It is shredded corned beef served with peppers and red onions, though no potatoes. I didn't miss the potatoes. Eggs were cooked a bit harder than my requested over-easy but again, not really an issue. I do wish I could have enjoyed a bloody mary with my breakfast but alas, did not see any booze there. Please be sure to bring cash as they do not accept credit cards. A very good breakfast, which I would recommend to anyone.

This is a favorite of my good friend for breakfast, I am less enthusiastic. My omlet used slice deli ham as did the Eggs Benedict, ehh. My companion complained that his blueberry pancakes tasted like bacon. It has a reputation for long lines and while we got right in, within 15 minutes a 20 minute wait had develped. It is small so any large groups generally wind up outdoors, ok if the weather is good.

We ate breakfast at the Sea Biscuit Cafe on a Friday morning and had a good meal. We would definitely go back again. I had the scrambled eggs, bacon, grits and biscuits. I don't think the food was any better than most breakfast places, but it's not bad either, and seeing as it's the only place to get breakfast on Isle of Palms it could be worse. ;) I had read some horror stories in other reviews about surly wait staff, but our server was friendly and prompt. No complaints about the service from me. Seating and parking are pretty limited. We arrived around 9 a.m. and there was one parking spot left (someone was leaving as we arrived). Not sure where we would have parked if that spot had not been available. We had to wait maybe ten minutes for a table of four. You can't wait inside the restaurant (no room) and when were there, it got pretty hot waiting on the covered front porch area.

Very delicious! The banana bread was served warm with fresh fruit on top. We had the mushroom omelet and eggs benedict. They were very generous wit the portions and both the quality of food and service were superb.

I was surprised a bit by the Sea Biscuit, very small location cranking out damn tasty food. The specials are certainly the way to go and they are quite inventive and very well done. My only complaint would have been the A/C situation which was being taxed quite a bit the morning we were there as it was quite hot out already and the place was very busy.

As with all places reviewed on Yelp, you have to read the reviews to really see what people are happy about or not-so happy about. I say this because I am stunned by some of the negative comments I've seen here about this restaurant. We were staying on IOP for a few days and this place was recommended by a local as a great place to get breakfast. We not only had excellent service, I mean, bright, cheery..."good morning" service! We had one of the best breakfasts we've ever had. Maybe omlettes are their thing. We each had omlettes that were cooked PERFECTLY. The breakfast potatoes were really good too. The biscuits were fantastic! I thought the prices were fair. Some people might think their prices are closer to a lunch menu rather than breakfast, not me. Someone on here mentioned how much Denny's or Waffle House would have cost. Uh, this place, thankfully, isn't Denny's or WH. You are at the beach where things tend to cost just a little more AND the food here wasn't swimming in a pool of grease. The only thing that I would say negatively is that they do not take any cards, cash only. I understand that it's an added expense for mom and pop shops to take credit cards because of added fees from banks, but it's 2012 and lots of people don't carry cash. Now that I know this, no big deal. I will try and remember to have cash with me before going next time. But, I'm sure many people do not expect to encounter this issue which could be really frustrating- especially in that location.

This is a fantastic breakfast spot. I went here with a group of 7 friends on a Friday morning, and it was amazing. I had a brilliant crabcakes benedict, which is eggs benedict but with crabcakes instead of ham, and served on a biscuit instead of an English muffin. The biscuits and gravy are surprisingly spicy (cayenne, I think). Everyone else loved their food too. The reason this gets 4 stars instead of 5 is that the service was a teensy bit, uh, surly.

This place is the quintessential tourist trap. Too many tables in too small a space, small portions, mediocre food, lackadaisical service and high prices. I ordered the eggs Benedict. For $8.50 I expected Canadian bacon, properly poached eggs and something more than just a half an unripe strawberry on the plate with them. Instead, there were two small English muffins, each with a thin slice of ham and topped with an egg that had barely felt the heat. When questioned about the absence of the Canadian bacon, the waitress curtly replied, "we use ham." I sent it back. My friends' portions were small also and each one said they'd had better tasting food. Here were some of the prices: $7.50 for three pancakes, ditto for French toast, $5.50 for two eggs, a handful of home fries and toast. None of the four of us minds paying top prices for top food and service. This little beach dive either needs to improve its product or cut the prices in half. We walked out of there ready to hit iHop for some breakfast. It was that bad.

Ordered the banana bread French toast, one of the specials for the day. It was decent, nothing special. My husband ordered another special, Mediterranean eggs Benedict, and it was amazing! Wish I would have ordered that. It's inside an old house which does not leave a ton of room for seating. It's also a little cramped. There is generally a wait so don't expect to get seated right away. They also only accept cash or check. We actually got to sit inside which was great because we got air conditioning. Sitting on the screened in patio is brutal when it's hot. The service was good but rushed. Overall a decent breakfast. I'm sure I will be back again.

Have been here several times. Great place. Low key. Very good food. Nice staff. Love this place in the off season when it is cold and damp. Great coffee and biscuits and gravy. Makes me wish it was January. Very good for kids too. Can't go wrong here.

Went for lunch today. I know Sea Biscuit is better known for its breakfasts, but we always have enjoyed lunch here, too. I noted the fresh flowers on every table. It's so peaceful to come here when the tourists are gone. Service is pleasant and very laid back. I had a lunch special - blackened chicken sandwich with avocado and it was a nice sized breast perfectly cooked. I don't know why other Yelpers have said it's pricey here. I think our lunch was fairly priced. My sandwich came with a choice of side. I chose the bean salad, which was sweet and good. Our meal price, quality and value was competitive with restaurants in Mt. Pleasant. I would give them 5 stars except I dislike my iced tea served in hard plastic cups. The plastic over time affects the taste of what goes in it. But, we'll be back. We love going to the beach just to each lunch.

Ok, if you are in the area, go there, but don't make a special trip. Same good breakfast food, nothing special. Nice people, clean restaurant. Long lines unless you go,early. Frank G

My bride and I absolutely love this place. We drove 2 1/2 hours just to eat brunch here on our anniversary, and it was worth the drive and the wait. I am not one to wait for a restaurant, but this place is worth it. Their ingredients are fresh and the food is delicious. If you're a local or just visiting the Isle of Palms, the Sea Biscuit is a must.

  • Jay J.

We had a friend of my son who used to live on the Isle of Palms recommend the restaurant to us. We ate breakfast there last Sunday morning. There were approximately 15 people in front of us and we had maybe a 10 minute wait before being seated. The service of the staff was very quick and polite. All of the 6 people in our group were very pleased with the food and service. One important thing of note...bring cash with you. The business does not take credit cards.

Fantastic for breakfast. Today was a cloudy wet day & we went there at 1030 for breakfast. About a 20 min wait. God only knows what it's like in summer. A quaint little spot with great food. I had the crab & spinach omelette. It was fantastic. Fresh large & came with home fries & biscuits. Delish. No credit cards. CASH ONLY. but there is an ATM on site. Parking tight. Will go again.

  • Laura H.

Got there before 9am on a Monday and only a 5 min wait. However, by 9 there were about 30 people in line. Food was quick to get to us and quite tasty. A little on the pricey side, but great quality for an area that has a lot of pizza and hotdog shops. We will be back for sure.

!!CASH ONLY!! Went for lunch and was underwhelmed. Breakfast must be their specialty according to the ratings. But I got a BLT and chips and waited 30 minutes....probably will not be returning for lunch.

We walked over here for breakfast one morning while staying on the Isle of Palms. This is a historic house renovated into a quant restaurant locally operated. They had a great menu full of classic breakfast items. There were several chalk boards on the walls that had about 5 specials for the day (breakfast and lunch). Those were the gems in my opinion! I had the spinach, portabella, and roasted tomato quiche with fresh fruit. The quiche was amazing.... not runny and not overcooked. The fruit was fresh... not one of those "fruit salads" like you get some places that you wonder how many days it has sat in a cooler. Ironically, when the waitress saw me stealing my husbands bananas from his plate she was happy, they come in about 4:30am to cut up that fruit daily!!!! My husband got the french toast with fresh fruit, it was perfection. The server was wonderful, she was sweet, down to earth, and we never went without anything. The only downfall is that they only take cash or check, I believe only NC and SC checks at that. The cashier told me they were supposed to get a ATM any day. I secretly like that they were cash only, reminded me of a place from home.

Large portions, popular spot, and cash only. Those are the three things you need to know about Sea Biscuit Cafe, which is a cute little cafe located close to the beach. We waited around 15 minutes for a table on a Monday morning. I ordered a bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit, which I was only able to eat half of, but it was tasty. Others ordered the corned beef with hash, which didn't have enough potatoes for their liking, but they enjoyed nonetheless. They also ordered the biscuits and gravy, which was huge and delicious. The tables split the special French toast, which was the best dish of all. Very good for breakfast!

  • Jamlen F.

Delicious vegetable egg white omelet with a lot of side options (grits, home fries, or fruit; biscuit or toast). I opted for fresh fruit and I wasn't disappointed. The only disappointment for me was not being able to taste the biscuits. However, I asked my friend who did have it and said it was worth the 15 minute car ride the opposite way of the airport. She said it had good moisture and not the grease bomb some places she experienced. If I am every in the area again, I would try their french toast (blueberry walnut was the special on my visit). Service was friendly and ambiance (we sat in the closed in patio) was as if you were dining in your grandparents outdated but super charming patio.

!!!!! C A S H O N L Y!!!!! Favorite place for breakfast on island of palms. Usually a wait to get in but it's well worth it! You must must try the shrimp gravy. Kinda like Spanish rice. Menu changes a lot Past time i got the bacons & fried green tomatoes eggs benidect was super amazing. Partner got the sausage egg biscuit. With huge cat head biscuits. Lol If you ever find yourself in island of palms. It's a must stop for breakfast

Stopped in here after a morning Eco tour. This place is perfect. Amazing fried flounder sandwich. Key lime pie looked delicious, unfortunately our neighbors at the next table got the last piece. Maybe next time. Definitely worth a stop.

My absolute favorite breakfast spot in the entire universe. Before I lived in Charleston I visited this spot on nearly every visit. When I lived in Charleston I visited it frequently. This is my first time back since I moved away two years ago and I had to swing by once again. The service, food and atmosphere all continues to not disappoint. If you want a good Low Country breakfast, whether light or full, I am certain you will find this joint very enjoyable.

Yummy local breakfast joint. Place is small and was very crowded but we only waited about 20 min. Food was fresh and came out super quick. Excellent breakfast menu that includes local seafood choices.

I had the veggie omelet and it was very bland. I've heard great things about their French toast and heavier items. But, I usually eat healthy, whole foods and love places who know how to make it taste great. I probably won't go back

Four of us in our party took a nice brisk walk from 37th St. all the way to the Seabiscuit Café. We were starving when we arrived. This was a nice little quaint place with very friendly service. It was nice and cool with the air conditioning on a very hot day. My wife and I ordered the walnut French toast and a large stack of pancakes. We had two coffees and an extra order of rye toast. Both meals came with fresh fruit. Our bill only came to $27. The food was fantastic! It is truly a can't miss place.

We tried the Seabiscuit Cafe by recommendation of a local and were so happy we did. Delicious breakfast, reasonably priced, with some of the nicest, most genuine staff we've ever encountered. Our omelettes were tasty and they even modified a fruit plate to my son's tastes simply by asking what he liked. The server sat down and chatted with us for quite a while, offering good suggestions for our time in the area, too. Please note it's cash-only, so be prepared!

  • Jim P.

We got there 10 mins before they opened and were worried when we saw the line out the door and around the front porch. Once they opened the door and let us all in we had our food ordered and served in under 15 mins - and they handled the whole place in that time frame!!! Wonderful fast, excellent, courteous service and awesome food. I tried their crab omelet, my wife had the ham, spinach, swiss cheese, mushroom omelet and our daughter had crab cakes eggs benedict. Everything came out fast and hot and was extremely delicious! We were nervous about the place when we got there but we will make it a regular stop for us when we visit IOP!

Found this place during our weekend stay on the island. Tried it out for breakfast and so glad we did. Got lucky on timing to get seated quickly. Definitely looks to be a locals favorite! Breakfast was delicious. The eggs were light and fluffy. The homefries were well seasoned. Nice crispy bacon. The bacon omelette doesn't disappoint on the amount of bacon in it. And homemade biscuit sealed the deal. Worth a visit if you're in the area.

Average rating for this establishment. Mainly a breakfast stop. Cash only policy is really outdated. The food was good. Our server was excellent.

This place has dated decor & is a typical beachtown dive estetically, but the food is bomb! Crab soup was better than many lobster bisques we have had at 4* restaurants. Do yourself a favor & pay the extra $1 to get a bowl instead of a cup of it. My crab cake sandwich was also great, as was my hubby's cuban sandwich. The only thing they could improve on is decor & to serve alcohol

    (4)
  • Sumie S.

My crab cake Benedict was prepared to perfection! Next time I'd like to order the blueberry walnut French toast but I'm a creature of habit and will crave this dish for several months before I can head down to IOP next. The atmosphere reminds me of grandma's eat-in kitchen. Waitress was very personable. Thanks for a great experience!!

Maybe I was expecting more with all of the hype. Breakfast here was okay but pricey. $4.50 for a kids pancake with a few slices of fruit? I tried the shrimp and gravy ($12) - five mid-size shrimp in a spicy pepper and tomato relish, served with two eggs, home fries and a biscuit. Biscuit and potatoes were good, eggs were bland and the spicy sauce just wasn't good to me. Tab for two adults and a child was $36, plus tip -- too much for breakfast fare. It is small inside with a screen porch of 5-6 tables. It does fill up - we departed at 9 am and found a lot of folks waiting.

Enjoyed breakfast here on vacation - had the special omelette with mushrooms, red peppers and Gouda, along with grits and a biscuit - yum! The treehugger was delicious as well. Good spot for families!

  • Julie H.

This place came highly recommended. It's small and cozy and part of the seating is on an enclosed porch. The food is very good but ever so slightly on the gourmet side. If you're looking for a southern breakfast like granny used to make, it's similar but more gourmet. It's kinda pricey too, for breakfast fare. I think they serve lunch as well but we only had breakfast. Target age range for diners is roughly 50 and up. Snow birds paradise. Everyone smells of old money.

The hostess forgot to write down our name and we waited about 45 minutes to be seated. Then no wait staff appeared until I asked the hostess for service. AND, the Sea Biscuit Cafe had run out of biscuits. Food was just ok.

Loved eating breakfast here! People started waiting in line before it opened at 7:30. Loved the fried eggs, creamy grits and the fluffiest biscuit! Attentive staff! Will definitely go back again! We were served and ate our breakfast within 30 minutes of being seated!

Dee-lightful. Delicious eggs, french toast, fresh fruit. They don't take cards, so come with cash (there's an ATM outside). Love the layout. Friendly staff. My vegetarian sister loved the spinach quiche. Big biscuits, get an order and split it.

  • R C.

I had never been there before. We arrived around 11:30 am on Sunday morning. There is a sign on the door which states cash or check only so come prepared. Only place to wait is outside. Inside is cramped and noisy. Reminded me of eating in New York. It's really tight. Once the waitress comes to the table it goes from tight to cozy. Our waitress was Tisha. She was great. Everyone was so friendly. They really seem to enjoy their jobs. It was loud and hectic but the more time you were there, you felt like family. I had the Shrimp Creole omelette and it was delicious and lots of shrimp!! Home fries were great. Coffee is strong and hot. Come hungry, leave stuffed. Enjoy!

Definitely the best place on the island for breakfast! For the record, I was torn about how many stars to give The Sea Biscuit. Based on food alone, I would totally doll out 5 stars. The food is fresh and hearty and obviously made with love and care. I had the Green Chili, Tomato, & Jack Cheese Omelette with Home Fries. The toppings weren't very strong but everything was fresh and cooked perfectly and super hearty. I had the choice of multi-grain toast, which made me super happy. My fiancee couldn't make up his mind so he chose two things: Egg Biscuit and Banana Bread (daily special). He was very happy with both of these. I stole a bite of the banana bread... heavenly. Based on all the other aspects of the restaurant, I only want to give 2 stars. Luckily, our wait wasn't too long, but we got here at the end of breakfast/more like brunch. The inside is soooo small and cramped. I had to be careful not to scoot my chair back to far or I would bump the man sitting behind me. Our server wasn't very friendly and we waited a little longer than we should have for orders so simple. The thing that bothered me the most about Sea Biscuit? THEY DON'T ACCEPT DEBIT OR CREDIT... CASH ONLY. Ugh. I guess looking back this is listed on their homepage and somewhere on the menu... but seriously? We live in the 21st century. It's 2013!!! We never carry any cash, so my fiancee had to walk 1/2 mile to an ATM.

Funky place, nice wait staff -- efficient but not cloying. We sat outside underneath the coolest metal scuplture. We were not told the special board though, which had some nice items on it. Make sure you ask. Biscuits wonderful and fluffy, good omelette and excellent grits. Get there early - we did 730am on a Thursday, and walked right in. Started filling up at 815. Whiners about cash -- get over it.

Best breakfast ever! We have been going to the Sea Biscuit for the past 17 years...whenever we are on the IOP. A quaint beach cottage with the homey feel and smells of summer. Service is very individualized. If you are ever at IOP be sure to stop in for breakfast or lunch...but bring cash or a check. They don't accept credit or debit cards! This restaurant always reminds me if vacation and summer.

We have had breakfast here several times. The food is normal breakfast food but very pricey. We have ordered various things and have always had consistent food quality, but nothing outstanding -a basic diner breakfast. We like having a convenient local restaurant that we can bike to on the island, yet have started going elsewhere as the service is acceptable but almost unfriendly. Given the price we are paying for basic breakfast we have decided several times to drive and go elsewhere.

This breakfast joint was a picturesque, comfortable spot. The food was great and reasonable. I enjoyed a breakfast sandwich and some home fries that were to die for. The coffee was fresh and the friendly staff topped it off several times. Overall a nice breakfast experience.

Price of the food was a bit higher than what I like to pay for breakfast but our party of 5 got plenty to eat. The ham & cheese omelet was fat with meat! Took a while to be waited on but the speed of the foo from the kitchen more than made up for it. Will def come back when we're in the area!

We had a group of 6, on Father's Day. This is a small place. Food and service excellent. Incredibly low price. Really really good. Our group rated it 99, out of 5. This is not high end. This is simple, down home. Done really really well. With very small dining area, and lots of people trying get in. They only take cash. There is an ATM in the parking lot. Small parking lot. Be prepared, be patient, and I know you will love it.

My mom and I went here for a breakfast while on vacation here. We did not have to wait long and the servers were very nice. I had the crab omelette which came with a biscuit potatoes and fruit. It was a lot Of food. My mom got the same thing but with a mushroom omelette. We were both very satisfied but it wasn't anything that exceeded expectations- It's simply a very tasty breakfast joint. But we will be back when we are in town again.

I can say that the Sea Biscuit has remained absolutely consistent in providing a terrible experience for breakfast. After avoiding them for almost 3 years we decided to give it a try. (Yes, our fault, that's the problem with very little competition on the island) We can't complain too much about the price as we knew from the beginning that they would be grossly overpriced. They delivered. It would be tolerable if the quality was great, it's not. I can only assume that when they hire and train their servers, they lead them to believe they are actually going to work at the DMV, not a restaurant. They are always rude and ungrateful. Anytime you ask for something, their reaction leads me to believe that their kitchen is actually located in Columbia. Of course, it was butter for which we asked so we should maybe not be so demanding on our condiment request, particularly with having ordered toast. In conclusion - where I am a huge Dave Ramsey fan, no credit cards? Really?

This restaurant illustrates why YELP is so important. The place looks a little old and decrepit from the outside. It is not a place that you would see from the road, and would stop at, if you did not know about it in advance. Inside, it is definitely old-fashioned and charming. Most importantly, the service is friendly and the food is outstanding. The waitress recommended the cinnamon French toast which was just great. We were there on a Monday morning and I noticed that when we got there around 7 AM, there was only one other party in the restaurant. As we proceeded through breakfast, the parking lot began to fill. It is probably a good idea to get there early. Excellent breakfast.

CON - CASH ONLY. If I can buy a 60 cent hamburger at McDonalds with a credit card, I should be able to buy a full meal here. I try to support small businesses as much as possible but many small businesses need to start using Square (it's that card reader that plugs into your iPad and presto!) PRO - Cozy dining environment. Friendly staff. Blueberry Walnut French Toast. Fresh fruit on every plate. Good home cooking that doesnt hurt the wallet. Good local place.

Real corn beef hash! Can remember the last time I had real (not canned) corn beef for breakfast. This perfectly prepared CB hash came with sautéed peppers and onions, creamy grits and 2 delicious scrambled eggs. The place was crowded, but what good restaurant isn't? Also sampled the salmon patty on one of my parties plate. As good as my grandmother used to fix me. Our meals also came with a wedge of fresh cantaloupe and a slice of Roma tomato. My wife had the bacon and cheese omelet and home fries( also found these to be cooked to perfection). If you don't like noisy places, it might not be for you. But, if you like a nice home cooked meal, with fresh ingredients, you've got to give this place a try. Tips: cash only. ( but there's an ATM on site). Make sure you get there early, the place is small, but comfortable. Our wait was 30 mins. And last, but not least, be prepared to wait on their single men/women restroom. I will come back, next time I'm in town.

Love this place when I'm visiting Charleston, the place is really small so get there early if you don't want to wait, also bring cash along as I recall that's all they take. Try the shrimp and gravy and even a fruit plate, then walk right to the beach and chill............

All the hype and the food was just OK. Got an omelet, homefries and toast. The toast was so hard that I couldn't eat it (and I was only 1 of 3 people there). The omelet was well made but could have had more cheese. The server was great - very friendly and kept my coffee cup full (good coffee). I don't think I'll go back... but maybe to try something else on the menu.

As an employee of Island Realty down the street from Seabiscuit, myself and my colleagues give them A TON of business. Not only do we frequent the cafe for takeout, but we have always highly recommended them to the guests staying in our 400 properties on the island. Sadly, we had a bad experience and aren't really feelin it anymore. Be warned- THE PRICES ON THEIR MENU ARE INCORRECT. They are higher now, and Seabiscuit is a cash-only establishment. This means that if you check the online menu, call to order, and then go in thinking you have the correct amount of cash, you will not, and the lady at the counter will subsequently get an attitude and treat you rudely when confusion ensues. They will then insist that you pay the extra money despite their price labeling mistakes. Fix your website and please be kind to us Seabiscuit, we are kind to you!

Great food! Cash only and breakfast only served until 11am. This is one of my favorite places for breakfast on IOP. However, prices on website are not accurate so make sure they give you up to date menu. Wish breakfast lasted longer!

If I had to use three adjectives to describe Seabiscuit Cafe, they would be: cute, homey and tasty. Please note that this restaurant is nothing like the lightening fast horse. Since other reviewers have said quite a bit...I'll just focus on the pros and cons: Pros: Some of the best fruit & granola I've ever had (The Treehugger), great specials like Fried Green Tomato BLT and various quiches, etc., scratch made ranch dressing, some amazing looking desserts, pleasant service, conveniently located near the beach. Cons: Parking sucks (they do tow in this lot), the wait for weekend breakfast can be quite long, cash only. All in all, a great place to grab a bite in IOP. Thanks, Seabiscuit!

Three for brunch, was a little warm on porch but well worth the weather. Loved the eggs with ham, potatoes. Even got grits extra and they were so good! Wait staff was fast and nice. Will go back again whenever we are in town, just remember to bring cash cause your credit is no good here. :)

I am impressed by this beach breakfast place. The biscuits are hooooj!!! I had the country ham. A couple of $$ more than it should have been and they don't take credit cards but hey this is the beach. Would definitely come back.

My wife and I just finished eating here and could NOT be happier with our choice. The food was delicious. I have NO idea what other reviewers were talking about re: poor service/rude waitstaff. Very friendly and accommodating to us and every other table we overheard. I think this eatery is a classic case of satisfying expectations. There is plenty of info telling people that they ONLY accept cash/check (including a check from NC, as we found out) - both online and as you walk in. The food is very good and every bit what I wanted and hoped for. The prices are no higher than any other place on the island with comparable fare, to my knowledge. More importantly, their prices are very consistent with eateries on any island - higher than regular places on the mainland but still packed with people. THAT is the main thing to know: despite not accepting CC's, having a small place with waits for tables, and some higher food prices - this place is packed and very popular even with plenty of competition. THAT is the mark of a great place.

What a delightful little breakfast and lunch place. Indoor and porch seating available. Everything we ordered was served at the perfect temperature and delicious. I recommend peeking at the daily specials before you decide. Today they had crab and spinach eggs benedict, bacon, zucchini, and cheddar quiche, and a cherry coffeecake. We ordered all three dishes, and a large fruit plate (which could have served 3-4). It is cash only, but there's an ATM down the street. And there were several outlets to charge my phone before I hit the beach. I would definitely return.

Best and biggest omelette I've ever had- also props for huge portion sizes and fast service- everything you'd want from a beach joint. Order off the specials menu- the items are amazing and fresh! The homefries must be soaked in some addictive chemicals- they are so amazing. Every order comes with a huge basket of carbs (i.e. biscuits or toast). The inside is cozy and small so beware the wait. This is a can't miss joint on IOP. Go for breakfast!

Run by aging Hippies. They make a great biscuit. My Eggs Benedict use deli ham, bummer. I think so things are better I just haven't had them. My friends enjoyed the corn beef hash, not my thing. The service was good, but the wait can be long.

Incredible brunch location. It has a relaxed, beach atmosphere. The food was excellent quality. The portion size was slightly large, but all the ingredients were very fresh.

My husband and I ate here twice during our three night stay on IOP. We loved the beachy, authentic cottage vibe and the service was very prompt. I recommend ordering from their specials. I ordered an omelette each time and my husband ordered the blueberry walnut french toast. Everything was delicious. We didn't have to wait for a table either day, but we are kind of early birds. Highly recommend this breakfast place!
